Tragischer Unfall in Südafrika

Am 12.12.2004 verunglückte der Dowhnhill-Skateboarder Lloyd McPherson tödlich beim World Cup in Südafrika. Er trug einen Helm der ihm leider nicht viel half. Manchmal schützt auch die beste Protection nicht. Darum: Skated immer nur so, dass ihr euch sicher fühlt. Risiken gehören zum Skaten dazu, ohne diese geht es nicht und gerade Downhiller suchen eben den Thrill. Skate safe.

12.12. Die Pizza liegt schwer im Magen. Ich habe eine kleine Krise. Leider gibt es vor dem Rennen nur zwei Trainings-Runs. Kent stürzt. Sein Helm hat nur wenig Polster und er schneidet sich den Kopf auf. Zudem hat er einen Riss im Schädel und eine kleine Blutansammlung im Kopf. Es gibt weitere Streetluge Crashs. Warten, warten, warten, langsam wird es langweilig. Nach der Mittagspause beginnen die Heats. Ich habe zuerst einen sehr einfachen 3er Heat. Den zweiten Heat fahre ich mit Craig, Dusty und Lloyd. Ich habe einen guten Start, Craig holt mich bis zum Ziel nicht ein. Im Ziel sehe ich nur noch Craig hinter mir. Dusty crasht in der Linkskurve und Lloyd in der Schikane. Er schlägt sehr hart mit dem Hinterkopf auf. Sein Helm, ein Charly Insider, schützt ihn nicht besonders gut. Laut Arzt hätte aber auch ein besserer Helm nicht viel mehr genützt. Der Pickup fährt zur Unfallstelle und bringt Lloyd auf die Main Road runter. Es vergeht eine gute halbe Stunde bis endlich der Helikopter kommt. Das Rennen wird daraufhin abgebrochen. Für Buttboard und Standup zählen die Zeitläufe. Am Abend gibt es eine Rangverkündigung beim Hangklip Hotel.

13.12. Wieder zuhause in Hout Bay erzählt mir Mike, dass Lloyd in einem künstlichen Koma liegt und ziemlich bald sterben wird. Ich bin ziemlich geschockt. Ich gehe klettern und muss immer wieder an Lloyd denken.

14.12. Die Maschinen werden abgestellt. Lloyd ist jetzt tot. Alle seine Organe werden gespendet.

16.12. Heute ist Lloyds Abschiedszeremonie in der Turnhalle von Llandudno (Cape Town). Die ganze Halle war voll mit Freunden, Angehörigen und vielen Skatern. Einige seiner Freunde erzählten ihre Erlebnisse mit Lloyd und kurze lustige Geschichten. Danach wurde Lloyds Asche auf dem Signal Hill bei Cape Town verstreut. Der Signal Hill war Lloyds Lieblings-Skate-Spot.

Bitte denk mal nach, ob dein Helm wirklich sicher ist. Falls du dich nicht sicher fühlst, so kaufe bitte einen neuen, sicheren Helm. Ride hard but safe!

Der Brief von Lloyd´s Dad an alle Skater:

Hi to all you lovely people. I'm Ian (Mac), Lloyd's dad, and I just want to express that your Love and Care has had a profound impact on me and my family, it just goes to show that we are one big spiritual family and when the crunch comes, our Truth comes to the fore and we stand together. Every time I read the emails you all sent, I get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, not from sadness, but from the emotional impact of experiencing the inherent Loving nature we Humans can express when a family member is in need of support.

Just a bit of background to Lloyd and I. We were more friends than the traditional father (and mother) / son relationship. We spent most of his free time together, either surfing, or I'd take him with his buddies to skate down Signal Hill.

On the physical and emotional level I was there at his birth, always there for him in whatever he did and finally he died in my arms. What more could a parent ask for and that is what makes it so much easier for me not to have any regrets of time lost, plus he died doing what he loved most, without any suffering, as the brainstem was damaged from the impact. From a spiritual perspective, I truly believe in God's Divine Will, so I do not question that the spirit in Lloyd had done its work and has now returned back Home.

Lloyd has a sister, Marcelle 20 years (28 Dec) who also lives with me and his mom resides in Marrakech. She loves her children dearly and there are no bad vibes in the family.

I could go on forever writing about how Lloyd was a gift from God, but the intention of this email is more to express my appreciation to all of you and to let you know that the family is coping, especially with the kind support and love from you all.
